5 Tips to get Your Home Fall Ready

Another year, another season, fall is upon us, it’s definitely time to think about ways to get your home ready for the shorter and cooler days ahead.

Use these 5 tips to get your home ready for the fall season.

1) Clean Out Your Gutters

Leaves can be beautiful but not when is seems like thousands of leaves are stuck in your gutter. As the leaves fall, it’s important to keep your gutters clean and free. During heavy autumn rains, clogged gutters won’t divert water properly, causing water to invade the foundation.

Also, visually inspect your roof for damaged shingles, flashing or vents. You can also inspect the chimney for any missing mortar and repair it by tuck-pointing, if needed.

2) Turn off outdoor plumbing

Make sure, before the cold weather comes, to drain and cover outdoor faucets and sprinkler systems, cover them to protect them from the freezing temperatures.

3) Prepare your furnace

Consider getting your furnace serviced by a pro before the cold season. At least, visually inspect your furnace and replace the filter before you start using regularly.

4) Clean Your Fireplace and Chimney

Clean out the fireplace, inspect the flue, and ensure the doors and shields are ok. Have the chimney swept y a professional if needed. Add to the firewood pile!

5) Check weather stripping

To avoid drafts and heat loss, inspect the entrances to your home. Weather stripping around doors is easy to replace. Look for dry, cracked pieces which may lead to loss of heat. Make sure your thresholds are the proper height and just touching the bottom of the door.
